Lake Wörthersee — Carinthia's jewel
At 16.5 km long and with water temperatures reaching up to 28 °C in summer, Lake Wörthersee is one of the warmest Alpine lakes in Europe. Its turquoise-green water and the surrounding mountain landscape make it the perfect destination for water lovers and nature enthusiasts.
From the Waldapartment in Velden, you can reach the lake in just a few minutes – the Velden lido is only 950 metres away.
The best beaches & lidos
Around Lake Wörthersee there are numerous public and private lidos with well-maintained lawns, jetties and restaurants.
- Strandbad Velden (950 m from the apartment): A spacious facility with diving platform, children's pool, beach volleyball and a restaurant right on the lake. Water temperatures reach a pleasant 25–28 °C in July and August.
- Strandbad Pörtschach (8 km): One of the most beautiful lidos on the lake with views of the Karawanken mountains. Ideal for families with children.
- Strandbad Maria Wörth (12 km): A quieter atmosphere on the southern shore peninsula with the famous pilgrimage church in the background.
Water sports & activities
Lake Wörthersee offers ideal conditions for numerous water sports:
- Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP): Boards can be rented at several stations around the lake. Perfect for beginners and advanced paddlers.

Boat tours & lake cruises
The Wörthersee shipping company connects all major towns on the lake. A round trip takes about 3 hours and offers magnificent views of the surrounding mountains, villas and castles.
Private boats and electric boats can be rented in Velden and other lakeside towns – no licence required for electric boats up to 4.4 kW.
Tips for your day at the lake
The best swimming season is from June to September, when water temperatures consistently stay above 22 °C. Early mornings, the lake is often mirror-calm – ideal for swimmers and SUP enthusiasts. In the evenings, the lidos offer a wonderful sundowner atmosphere.
